I Giochi Olimpici del furono le prime Olimpiadi a venire boicottate.L'Olimpiade is an opera libretto in three acts by Metastasio originally written for an operatic setting by Antonio Caldara of The story, set in Ancient Greece at the time of the Olympic Gamesis about amorous rivalry and characters' taking places to gain the loved one. The story ends with the announcement of two marriages.

The court composer Caldara was assigned to compose the music. The libretto attracted attention immediately and productions were soon mounted across Europe.

Indeed, it ranks with Metastasio's Demofoonte and Didone abbandonatawhich were excelled in popularity only by Artaserse and Alessandro nell'Indie. Megacles arrives in Sicyon just in time to enter the Olympic Games under the name of Lycidas, a friend who once saved his life.

Unknown to Megacles, Lycidas is in love with Aristaea, whose hand is to be offered to the winner of the games by her father, King Cleisthenes. Lycidas, once betrothed to Princess Argene of Crete, is unaware that Megacles and Aristaea already love each other, and he subsequently tells his friend of the prize. Aristaea and Megacles greet each other fondly, but Megacles now feels bound by his promise to compete as Lycidas.

Meanwhile, Argene arrives in Olympia disguised as a shepherdess, to win back Lycidas. Megacles wins the games, confesses the truth to Aristaea and departs, broken-hearted. When Lycidas comes to claim her, Aristaea reproaches him, as does the disguised Argene, much to his dismay.

Amyntas, tutor to Lycidas, reports that Megacles has drowned himself, and King Cleisthenes, apprised of the deception, banishes Lycidas. Argene prevents the desperate Aristaea from suicide, Megacles is rescued by a fisherman, and Lycidas contemplates the assassination of the king.

Aristaea pleads mercy for Lycidas and Argene offers herself in his place; as proof that she is a princess, she shows Cleisthenes a chain given her by Lycidas.

He recognizes it as belonging to his son, abandoned in infancy to forestall the prophecy that he would kill his father. Lycidas, reinstated, accepts Argene, leaving his sister to Megacles. More than 60 baroque and classical composers used the libretto for their own settings. The first composer to reuse the libretto was Antonio Vivaldi in Venice in This was followed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi 's famous version in In Thomas Arnewho "still nursed the hope of achieving success in Italian opera", persuaded the directors of The King's Theatre in London to produce his own setting of the opera, which turned out however to be a complete failure.

Johann Nepomuk Poissl 's Der Wettkampf zu Olympia, oder Die Freunde was the first German-language setting and his version enjoyed occasional revivals during the nineteenth century. Beethoven set the duet "Ne' giorni tuoi felici" for tenor, soprano and orchestra in — WoO The following is a list of the most notable operas that subsequently utilized Metastasio's libretto in chronological order of first performance:.

Wikimedia Commons. The event was overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer at Olympic village were killed by Palestinian Black September terrorists.

The Summer Olympics were the second Summer Olympics to be held in Germany, after the Games in Berlinwhich had taken place under the Nazi regime. The West German Government had been eager to have the Munich Olympics present a democratic and optimistic Germany to the world, as shown by the Games' official motto, "Die Heiteren Spiele"[2] or "the cheerful Games".

The Olympic Fanfare was composed by Herbert Rehbein. The design of the stadium was considered revolutionary, with sweeping canopies of acrylic glass stabilized by metal ropes, used on such a large scale for the first time. The Games were largely overshadowed by what has come to be known as the "Munich massacre". Just before dawn on September 5, a group of eight members of the Palestinian Black September terrorist organization broke into the Olympic Village and took eleven Israeli athletes, coaches and officials hostage in their apartments.

Two of the hostages who resisted were killed in the first moments of the break-in; the subsequent standoff in the Olympic Village lasted for almost 18 hours. The German authorities planned to ambush them there, but underestimated the numbers of their opposition and were thus undermanned. During a botched rescue attempt, all of the Israeli hostages were killed.

Four of them were shot, then incinerated when one of the terrorists detonated a grenade inside the helicopter in which the hostages were sitting. The 5 remaining hostages were then machine-gunned to death. All but three of the terrorists were killed as well. Although arrested and imprisoned pending trial, they were released by the West German government on October 29,in exchange for a hijacked Lufthansa jet. Two of those three were supposedly hunted down and assassinated later by the Mossad.

The Olympic events were suspended several hours after the initial attack, but once the incident was concluded, Avery Brundagethe International Olympic Committee president, declared that "the Games must go on".

A memorial ceremony was then held in the Olympic stadium, and the competitions resumed after a stoppage of 34 hours. Security at Olympics was heightened further beginning with the Winter Olympicsas they were the first to take place after the September 11 attacks.

The massacre led the German federal government to re-examine its anti-terrorism policies, which at the time were dominated by a pacifist approach adopted after World War II. It also led Israel to launch a campaign known as Operation Wrath of Godin which those suspected of involvement were systematically tracked down and assassinated.Alberto Moreno could be sidelined for up to six weeks with an ankle injury.

The Liverpool left-back will be assessed by a second specialist over the weekend but the fear is the problem, sustained in Wednesday's 7-0 win over Spartak Moscow, could keep him out until the new year. James Milner is likely to fill the vacancy for Sunday's Merseyside derby at home to Everton while captain Jordan Henderson is set to start in midfield after sitting out in midweek.

Senegalese international Cheikhou Kouyate will be sidelined for Saturday's EPL match against Chelsea. The West Ham midfielder injured a hamstring in Sunday's defeat at Manchester City and will also miss next Wednesday's home game against Arsenal. Seattle Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been ruled out of this weekend's MLS Cup final after failing a fitness test on Thursday. Alonso suffered a strained quad in September that he has been dealing with ever since.

He made a substitute appearance versus Vancouver in the Western Conference semifinals but has otherwise been sidelined throughout the playoff push. UEFA announced on Thursday that Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal will miss the holder's Champions League last-16 first leg tie after issuing a two game ban for appearing to deliberately pick up a booking. Carvajal was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute for time wasting in the 6-0 win over APOEL.

As it was his third, it ruled him out of Wednesday's victory over Dortmund, but in theory would have meant he was available for the round of 16 next February. However, UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body found that Carvajal had breached Article 15 of the Disciplinary Regulations. Stoke manager Mark Hughes says Bruno Martins Indi will be out for up to eight weeks as he recovers from a groin injury.

The Netherlands international had to be substituted during last weekend's 2-1 triumph over Swansea.

He has started his treatment already, but it will be a long process. Goalkeeper Gianlugi Buffon did not even feature against the Greek side as he continues to recover from a calf injury. Stephan Lichtsteiner has also missed the past two games with a muscle injury and is doubtful. Mehdi Benatia returned to training and is no longer a doubt while Mario Mandzukic is now fully recovered from his injury and highly likely to feature against Inter. Giorgio Chiellini is also likely to return after the flu kept him out of the Olympiacos game.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara suffered a concussion in the first quarter of New Orleans' game Thursday against Atlanta. Kamara was hurt when he caught a pass for a 4-yard loss and his helmet collided with Falcons linebacker Deion Jones'.At first, shale producers found ways to keep the oil pumping. Thanks to increased U. But the strong dollar meant OPEC countries could remain profitable at lower oil prices.

At the same time, global demand grew slowly, from 92. Most of the increase was from China, which now consumes 12 percent of global oil production. But its economic reforms are slowing growth. In February 2016, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Iran discussed a production freeze. That briefly put a floor under plummeting oil prices. But it didn't pan out because Iran and Russia refused to cut their production. By then, the cheap sources of oil will have been exhausted, making it more expensive to extract oil.

By 2026, the United States will become a net energy exporter. It has been an energy importer since 1953. Oil production will rise until 2030, when shale oil production will slow. The EIA's forecasts all depend on 1) what happens with U. The predictions given here are for the EIA's most likely scenario.

It based its prediction on skyrocketing demand from China and other emerging markets. It seems unlikely now that shale oil has become available. That didn't stop the EU from being the world's third-largest oil consumer. As long as people have time to adjust, they will find ways to live with higher oil prices. Furthermore, 2020 is only three years away. Look how volatile prices have been in the last 10 years.

It plummeted to a 13-year low in January, then doubled to current levels. OPEC is counting on it. The OECD admits that high oil prices slow economic growth and lower demand for oil itself. High oil prices can result in "demand destruction. Demand destruction occurred after the 1979 oil shock. Oil prices steadily deteriorated for about six years.

They finally collapsed when demand declined and supply caught up. Oil speculators could spike the price higher if they panic about future supply shortages. That's what happened to gas prices in 2008. Traders were afraid that China's demand for oil would overtake supply.

These fears were grossly unfounded, as the world soon plunged into recession and demand for oil dropped. Keep in mind that any perceived shortages can cause traders to panic and prices to spike. Perceived shortages could be caused by hurricanes, the threat of war in oil-exporting areas or refinery shutdowns. But prices tend to moderate in the long term.
